Project

Atlantic Wave Energy Sustainable Deployment Initiative (AWESDI)

Programme

Interreg Atlantic Area

Duration

30 months (2026-2028)

Budget

2.4M€

Summary

AWESDI is a transnational initiative introducing an innovative approach to accelerate the deployment of wave energy systems (WE) in the Atlantic Area (AA). Coastal regions in Portugal, Spain, France and Ireland share vast wave energy potential but face common WE deployment barriers, including fragmented regulatory frameworks, infrastructure limitations, and public acceptance challenges.

AWESDI will adopt a systemic design approach to ensure that WE solutions are not only technically feasible but also commercially viable, socially inclusive and environmentally friendly, according to the unique characteristics of the most promising AA sites.

The project will deliver:

  • advanced sustainable design and holistic assessment tools,
  • WE technology-/site-specific exploitation strategies,
  • comprehensive and coordinated policy recommendations,
  • and a joint WE Deployment Roadmap to accelerate the buildup of a cohesive and scalable WE market across the AA

Objectives

The AWESDI project aims to accelerate the deployment of wave energy systems (WE) in the Atlantic Area (AA). The project will foster collaboration among regional, national and European quadruple-helix actors to identify the most promising AA marine renewable energy hotspots and matching WE-based solutions, and the recommended strategies to foster their sustainable deployment, thus contributing to accelerate the transition towards a carbon-neutral AA.

The Pôle Mer’s Role

WP1 – Activity Leader (Activity 1.2), co-organizing the first Community Forums and Open Innovation workshops running in France, and coordinating with all other partners the events in their respective countries. Close support to INEGA (WP1 leader) in the WP1 reporting.

WP4 – Participation in all communication and outreach activities, in developing the long-term strategy for the WE. Deployment in the AA, as well as in the creation of the exploitation plans, particularly those related to the WE projects led by French companies, such as AWESDI project partner GEPS Techno
