After eight years of development, AI-powered vision systems are now making their way into the naval sector. At REPMUS (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems), the Portuguese Navy’s annual exercise dedicated to testing unmanned systems and emerging autonomous technologies, SEA.AI demonstrated the capabilities of its « Machine Vision » technology. The solution is designed to rapidly and reliably alert crews to objects on the surface of the water, offering particular value for USVs (Uncrewed Surface Vessels).

An additional layer of situational awareness

SEA AI vision

SEA.AI deployed its AI-powered vision technology across several crewed and uncrewed vessels during REPMUS 2026, held from 31 August to 25 September in Tróia and Sesimbra, Portugal. The exercise brought together 36 nations, alongside navies, industry and research organisations, to test autonomous maritime systems and their interoperability in realistic operational conditions.

The technology was integrated onto USVs operated by Maritime Robotics, SYOS Aerospace and the Portuguese Navy. Using live camera feeds, SEA.AI’s system provides an additional perception layer alongside radar and AIS, enabling the detection and classification of objects on and above the water.

The trials also demonstrated how a common perception system can be integrated across different platforms, autonomy architectures and mission profiles. This approach highlights the growing importance of interoperability in multinational maritime operations, enabling technologies developed by different organisations and countries to work together in realistic conditions.
