Funded project

The aim of the TACTIPECHE project is to provide fishing industry professionals and scientists with a system comprising multibeam sonar and an integrated software platform for quantitative data analysis and decision-making support. This open-source system will feature the interfaces needed to feed into fishery databases, electronic logbooks and information systems.

TACTIPECHE will improve methods for assessing stocks by merging information from multiple sensors into a single, scientific information system.

The TACTIPECHE project is innovative in its development of multibeam sonar which until now has been used exclusively by scientific bodies in the field of industrial fishing to enable ship owners to move towards more efficient and better selection methods.

The high quality of the project’s acoustic data has meant it can be exploited for spatialization and qualification of the biomass, an unprecedented approach in the fishing industry. Together with industry professionals, a new method of working has been devised to allow crews to be more selective in their approach to the biomass resource which they can more readily qualify and select as they fish.

Spin offs and future developments

1 CIFRE thesis

1 patent currently being registered

1 Fisheries Research publication currently being produced

1 symposium (Marine Ecosystem Acoustics in Nantes in May 2015)

Commercial promotion of the system directed at international fisheries was launched in April 2013. Eight systems have been delivered to the mackerel and herring fisheries of the Faroe Islands, clearly demonstrating the value of this technology and the method that goes with it.

One system has been installed at trawler owners Armement Bigouden.

The system is being introduced at the Ocean Tuna Fishery to increase the capacity for real-time analysis of schools of fish and to minimise bycatch of dolphin and juveniles.
