Companies in the French aquaculture industry – fish farmers, feed producers and suppliers of ingredients – have decided to undertake a global examination of the raw materials used to devise ‘new generation’ aquaculture feeds free from flour and fish oil.

The key objective of the NINAqua project is to offer new aquaculture feeds which rely on a diverse range of plant sources that are still rarely or never used for animal foodstuffs and which involve developing new ingredients from yeasts, microalgae and insects.

The NINAqua project will evaluate the impact of new feeds at various levels:

- Fish growth performance and health

- Environmental conservation

- French fishing industry economy.

The choice of trout and bass is also a fresh approach, as these two species possess different physiological characteristics and nutritional needs and can therefore serve as a model for other fish species farmed around the world.

The NINAqua project is recognised jointly by the Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique, Pôle Aquimer, Pôle Mer Méditerranée, Pôle Agri Sud Ouest Innovation and Pôle Hydréos.
